"Good Mommy"

Life on this little family farm is always interesting for we learn new things all the time.  This time it was dealing with a broody hen.   Her name is Frosting and she has a matching hen who is brownish orange in color who's name is Cupcake.  Guess who named them?   In any event, Frosting decide a few weeks back that she wanted to become a Mommy.   So she took to four, unfertilized eggs in the hen box and hasn't move, except to get water and food.  Oh how you can see the determination in her eyes!  So in chatting with a friend that has numerous chickens she gave us some options.  One, she could give us some fertilized eggs to switch out and she could hatch those.  Problem is not having control of what you are going to get.  We know we want hens and hens that are good egg layers.  So second choice...Find new chicks and introduce them to her.  A surrogate!  Some people do not like this option as some hens do not take to this process and kill the young.  We had confidence in Frosting and we can safely report she has taken to them as her own.  She took that 1st hen and tuck it right underneath her, then we kept giving her all six.  It was a bit cool last night, but Frosting is nice and fluffy and did a great job keeping them comfy.  Way to go Frosting...Good Mommy!
